Our day at Barrow Hill Roundhouse…

We were really lucky to be invited to Barrow Hill Roundhouse – the only working railway roundhouse in the United Kingdom – for the ‘Ticket To Ride’ steam gala event. The Roundhouse is an amazingly atmospheric place – as soon as you step inside you feel as though you’ve been transported to a bygone age!

At the steam gala there were lots and lots of famous steam engines including the Duke of Sutherland, a train that we had been learning about in class. The Duke of Sutherland once pulled the Royal Train with Queen Elizabeth II on board!

Barrow Hill Roundhouse is the last working railway roundhouse in the UK.

We were truly inspired by the model trains made by a gentleman who used to work at the Roundhouse. In fact we were so inspired that we are going to have a homework competition to make our own model trains that will then be judged by the gentleman himself.

Thank you to everybody at Barrow Hill Roundhouse who made us feel so welcome, we look forward to coming back again very soon!

Here we are admiring some amazing model trains, including a huge model of Barrow Hill Roundhouse!

Checking out a model train. Amazingly all of the trains are made from old cereal boxes that are then spray painted with metallic paint.

Our village is called Barrow Hill because the man that built the village was called Richard Barrow and most of the village was built so that coal mines had a home to live in while working

Our village is called Barrow Hill because of Richard Barrow. Also because we live on a big hill full of houses and flats.

The trip was very interesting and tought me more about trains! You should visit it! Thank you for your comment!

Our village is called Barrow Hill because of Richard Barrow, the creator of our village, also because we live on a large hill.

I think it is important to learn about the past because if we didn’t, we’d not know why the world is like this, and who created our village.

The Barrow Hill Roundhouse looks like a fascinating place to visit.
Those old steam trains have so much character. What a fabulous idea to make your own trains and how lucky you are to have a Train expert judging your models.
    Thanks for sharing this excursion.
Why do you think that it is important to learn about things in our past?
I have also been wondering, why is your area named Barrow Hill?
    Mrs Verona Gridley 🙂
